OurNet, the Exeter-based initiative that’s planning to transform the way we use and benefit from social media, has announced it’s moving to Lisbon, Portugal.
Both Founder and CEO Michael Brodie as well as Global Community Manager Carl Munson are upping sticks and heading to the Portuguese capital to create an office, which will be home to an expanded development and delivery team.
“We’re very excited to be moving to Lisbon and drawing on the city’s growing reputation for innovation and technological talent,” says OurNet’s leading light Brodie. “There are things I’ll miss about the UK, and Devon in particular, but I want to give our organisation the best circumstances for growth, and that looks like Lisbon to me.”
According to local lifestyle guide ‘Lisbon Lux’, it looks like Michael’s choice is a wise one: “Because the Portuguese market has become known for being open to technological innovation, it’s been used by international companies as a test for new products.”
“It’s now much easier to do business in Portugal, and the EU has recognised it as one of the countries that most reduced bureaucracy. It’s possible to set up a company in less than one hour, and according to a Global Benchmark Report, Portugal is the 7th in the OECD with the lowest levels of costs,” the guide adds.
OurNet’s rapid development plans include the recruitment of programmers, designers, administrative staff and other associated professionals for its new base, totalling around eight new jobs for Lisbon, host of this year’s Web Summit, the “best technology conference on the planet”.
“I’m really looking forward to finding and working with our new team,” says Carl Munson, OurNet’s ‘Town Crier’ who’s already soaking up the Atlantic culture. “This is a great country, with wonderful, helpful and talented people. I can’t wait to get started in the capital.”
As a new kind of social media platform, launching Spring 2018, OurNet will work like a ‘virtual village’ creating a new culture for community building, on and off-line, that rehumanises, refines and rewards participation.
